How many plastic cleaning bottles do you throw away every year? Millions of pounds of plastic cleaning bottles are thrown away in the U.S. annually. At A Better Way, we buy as many of our chemicals as we can from local zero-waste markets (Thank you Conscious Living in Manitou Springs!). That means that just by using our service, our clients alone save hundreds of pounds of plastic from going into landfills every year. You are also supporting other local businesses in the process!
We didn't start this company for profit, we did it to find a better way to do business. That's why at least 5% of our profits go to environmental non-profits, chosen by each contractor. See the “Our Mission & Charities” tab for more information and to consider donating to our organizations.
Choosing A Better Way is choosing to stand for the planet through sustainability.
Society typically expects unpaid or underpaid labor from women. Work that is viewed as traditionally female is not financially valued like work that is traditionally male. When women take over an industry that men used to work, the wages for that industry decrease. Women in the same building doing the same job as their male coworkers tend to be paid less.
While the wage gap is decreasing and the reverence for “women's work” is increasing in our society, there are plenty of people who have fallen through the cracks, left to struggle for financial and personal independence. Professional cleaning is in the crosshairs of this issue. Cleaning is traditionally viewed as work that women do, requires minimal previous education, and is physically draining labor. Large companies often take advantage of their employees by paying less-than-a-living-wage, offering few benefits, asking far too much of the employee, and offering little support - all the while charging the customer an exorbitant amount of money AND asking for tips because they won't pay their employee a living wage.
When Becca Sue worked for large companies, she trained dozens and dozens of people. Unfortunately, more often than not they were women seeking independence from a bad living situation. These women were working their hands bloody every week to try and claw their way out from under abusive partners or family. Becca Sue constantly found herself thinking, “There has got to be a better way to treat people," and soon after A Better Way Cleaning was born.
At its core, A Better Way is a way to empower people and give them an avenue to success and independence. We do this by:
1) paying a living wage,
2) training contractors how to market themselves so that they start their own business, and
3) providing the support, education, and opportunities they need to create their own lives.
